Are dogs allowed at The Pinnacles, Western Australia?
I love my dog, she is a big ball of love, and she loves a car ride! School holidays are around the corner and I got thinking, can I take my dog to the Pinnacles?
In short, No, you can’t take your dog into the 30 minute self-drive loop that is the Pinnacles Desert Lookout and Drive, but you can leave your dog in the Department of Wildlife Self-Service Kennels near-by on Bradley Loop, in Cervantes. You will need to bring your own lock. If you are travelling from Perth, it makes sense to drive past the Pinnacles entrance and first visit the seaside town of Cervantes, 15 minutes north, have some lunch and say "see you later" to your pooch at the kennels first. |

Can I take my dog to Cervantes?
It’s a decent 2 hour drive up the coast from Perth, and if you’re visiting the Pinnacles you might be wondering how dog friendly the surrounding towns are.
Yes, you can certainly take your dog to Cervantes, and they are even welcome on the beach!
Jurien Bay and Cervantes both have off-leash areas for dogs on beaches at the northern and southern ends of town. In Jurien Bay the off-leash areas start to the south of Lindsay Street and to the north of the boat harbour groyne. In Cervantes the off-leash areas are north of the jetty from the end of Catalonia Street and south of the end of Barcelona Street. There are also doggy bags for picking up items when nature calls in most parks and along the main foreshore paths in each town.

However, in town, the local Cervantes \ Jurien Dandaragan Council states that all dogs in public must be on a leash and under control at all times, so no free-runs up and down the main street. The seaside Cervantes Caravan Park also welcomes well behaved pooches, and runs the well stocked Seashells Café across from a popular grassed playground. So you can let your puppy (and kids) feel the grass between their toes.
Can I take my dog to Lancelin?
If you travel south along the Indian Ocean Drive, you will find Lancelin, a great spot for lunch and a dip in the Ocean with your pup. Famous for sand boarding and its giant sand dunes, Lancelin is a favourite holiday spot with Perth locals.
Yes, Lancelin is a particularly dog friendly town, with dogs allowed on every beach. North and south of the main township they are allowed off leash, and dogs are welcome on lead around the main town centre. So grab your treats and head to Lancelin for some sandy fun. |
Can I take my dog to the sand dunes at Lancelin?
Yes, you can take your dog to the sand dunes at Lancelin. The area is not a national park or protected area. But be aware that the area is busy with off road vehicles, dirt bikes and 4 wheelers - so common sense applies. To access the sand dunes, you really need a 4WD yourself, as the soft white sand will bog a normal road vehicle, and the locals make a tidy living rescuing tourists who attempt and fail. Dogs don't have the gripping limbs necessary for a true 4wd adventure on the dunes, they'll be thrown about like an 'esky in the ocean'. So its probably better if they wait at base camp with someone while your crew goes exploring.
There is so much to see and do on the Turquoise Coast north of Perth that it pays to dedicate a good few days to get a feel for it all. |
