Which beach is calling you?
Cottesloe
Best suited for:
Couples, Short Daytrippers What kind of beach is it?
Cottesloe is an open ocean beach, located in a wealthy residential area of Perth Western Australia. The beach has grassed banks, over looking the sand. Underwater sand banks create small to medium dumping waves, which require you to jump over the wave in the shallows. Best suited to adults and older children. Positives:
+ Pretty beach on route to Fremantle + Historic Indiana Tea Rooms on waterfront + Large grassed areas overlooking swimming beach, good for sunbaking Negatives: - Dumping waves, even on a nice, calm day - Limited showering facilities / 1 cold rinse shower on beach front - Limited accessibility. Steep steps / slopes make this a difficult beach for elderly / prams etc Our Review: 3/5 Stars
While Cottesloe is a popular and well known Perth beach, it is more suited to locals. Difficult terrain and older facilities make swimming at this beach hard work. Pretty views of Fremantle Port and the Perth coastline are easily accessible. Nice local cafes and a popular pub overlooking the main road and oceans. |
Scarborough
Best suited for:
Young adults, Teenagers, Surfers What kind of beach is it?
Scarborough is an open ocean beach, located in a bohemian, touristy, shopping precinct in Perth Western Australia. Underwater sand banks and high winds create medium to large rolling waves almost year round. This beach is generally unsuited to swimming. Best suited to adults and teenagers who can brave the waves and visit the bars, clubs and cafes. Positives:
+ Extensive playground and skatepark + Large grassed hills, allowing impressive views of coastline + Excellent toilets and warm showering facilities + Closest beach to Perth and easy accessibility to beach / parks / playground. Negatives: - Large rolling waves, even on a nice calm day - Not suitable for beginner swimmers Our Review: 4/5 Stars
This is a great park with impressive facilities, close to Perth by public transport. Huge playground will entertain even older children, while keeping younger children suitably on their toes. Climbing walls and foam padded fall areas are great. Lots to see and do. The downside of "Scarbs" is that its world class skate park and surf beach is beyond the ability level of most tourists and young children, but you can always sit and be impressed by the locals. |
Hillarys
Best suited for:
Families, Young children, Elderly What kind of beach is it?
Hillarys is a man made beach located in a tourist friendly marina north of Perth, Western Australia. The beach is closed, meaning calm, flat waters all year round. This beach is a family friendly beach, suitable for small children and elderly. Free water slides and a jetty to jump off create interest and excitement for older children. Perfect for weak or beginner swimmers. Positives:
+ Beautiful calm swimming beach all year round + Excellent access for prams, wheelchairs + Disability ramp access into water + Free water slides and jetty access + Excellent toilets and warm showers + Large market boardwalk and marina Negatives: - Greater traveling distance from Perth - Not as artistic and lively as Scarborough, Our Review: 5/5 Stars
Hillarys is an underrated tourist beach, often missed because of its longer distance from Perth. Because it is a man-made beach, this beach has calm flat conditions, perfect for swimming at any time of the day or year, and at any ability. This beach is highly recommended for younger families or children, or for non-confident swimmers. Make a day of it and visit the state aquarium, AQWA, while here, or take a fishing charter or helicopter ride from the marina. Hillarys is a beautiful way to soak in some of the Aussie beach lifestyle. |
